Syd Hardin

An American Artist from Somerville, MA
Today I have a lady with a fierce concept and fantastic way of presenting it. I'm not sure if I've actually seen anything like her work around before, I'm actually a little afraid of talking about the idea to much as I have her personal statement which perfectly describes what she does. What I will say is the composition and story within each piece is wonderfully structured and I'm in love with her visual style. Its pop like quality combined with a darker more questioning undertone hits my spot. I hope it hits yours to.

Now I'll let Syd explain in more detail what its about.....

Now for the substance: I'm the first to admit that I really don't understand the relationship between my gender and the erotic within the popular media. Why does the popular media stunt the erotic range of women, churning out overly simplified representations of female sexuality aimed at male and female consumers alike? Why can women appear only as vessels for our cultural fantasies - whether unnaturally pure or intensely impure? These remarkably one-dimensional representations of my own sexual identity make me want to guffaw and scream in almost equal measure. In retaliation, my work takes this marketing of female sexual identity to what I perceive as its logical extremes. These are my interpretations - both sinister and humorous - of the eroticized chimeras to which some look for inspiration, and others look for titillation

ANNOUNCENT: Girl Hereos

Something very exciting is coming to FEP's Artist of the Week, a new feature called:

Girl Hereos

In my travels around the internet I find lots of exciting art and creation.

Recently I have been especially interested about how many incredible ladies are around. These girls seem to be able to blend amazing skill with imagaination and make some truly glorious work which never fails to astound me. After much thought I decided that showcasing this talent in a different and more personal way could make a really fun and interesting feature.

So....... I am asking these wonderful ladies to video themselves answering  a set of questions I have formulated to let them discuss both their internal world and process in a more personal and engaging way.

The first video should hit the blog sometime around October, I'm really excited! and I really think you're going to love it to.

Mike Lay

An American Artist
today we have Mike Lay, whose work I enjoy on various levels, firstly the images are entertaining and energetic, secondly the line work is subtle, slightly spikey and wonderfully imagined. Their naivety is an asset, it adds warmth to each piece and is something to aspire to for me personally.

Kohei Akiba

A Japanese artist from Tokyo, Japan
I felt like something a little more outrageous colour wise these week, so I decided Kohei was the best choice. His work is intense and ominous, it feels violent and almost scary. But thats why I love it, it draws you in and mesmerizes you in its raw power.

Anita Dominoni

A Brazilian artist from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
Todays artist is someone that has tickled my funny bone and my eye muscles in equal degree. I did stumble across her sometime ago but have kept her on the back burner for a little while but now IT IS TIME. I love the composition of every piece of work, she seems to weave these odd but beautiful scenes and characters. Each face tells a story and has dry witty eyes that quietly question you but don't judge.

Norma de León/Muxxi

A Guatamalen artist and graphic designer
This week due to illness I have left looking for an artist till quite late, fortunately yesterday I nearly immediately stumbled across someone that perked up my mood:Muxxi. Her work is vivid, joyful and has happily transported me far away from the horrible sicky feeling I have at the moment. I could look at it all day........

My real name is Norma de León, but a lot of people knows me as Muxxi; I'm a guatemalan graphic designer and illustrator, whenever I have the time i love to draw characters that sudenly come to my mind, I think that's my way to express how i feel in the moment.
